Glynns Thomas had logged 18 years in her marketing career when she decided to make a lifestyle change to spend more time at home with her children. Now, as owner of San Francisco-based Advertising Spark, Glynns helps other mompreneurs and small business owners advertise creatively on a shoestring budget. Find out how this winner of the Startup Nation Leading Moms in Business 2009 Competition discovered her mothering style and how she plans to celebrate the final days of summer with her family.
Q: Glynns, what is your "mom philosophy"?
"That mothering is about helping my children grow to become self-sufficient, great citizens of the world. I do this through helping them understand who they are and their strengths. I am a fan of the book, "Mother Styles" by Janet P. Penley. It takes your Myers-Briggs personality type and helps you understand how that affects the type of mother you are, what your strengths and weaknesses are when it comes to mothering, and how it relates to the type of personalities of your children. Fascinating stuff!"
Q: What is the biggest challenge of being a mother and business owner, and how do you rise to the challenge?
"Getting into a groove to find dedicated, quiet thinking time. Our lives are ever-evolving. When school is in, we have one schedule; when summer is here, we have another schedule, and various after-school activities can change schedules, too. Sometimes I work at night. Sometimes in the early morning. Sometimes for a half hour at the park or when they're out in the backyard. Although I'd love a more consistent life, I've come to realize that's the way it is when you're home with the kids. It's a long way from the corporate life I used to lead. I've learned to be more tolerant of change and work with it. I also work really hard at teaching the children how to settle their own disputes. The more I don't have to referee, the more I can work, and the better their relationship and social skills. I'm fortunate to have children who get along exceptionally well."
Q: What special traditions do you have in your family?
"One of our favorites is heading to Drakes Beach at night in late September. The northern California beaches are usually cold and foggy, but in September and October, the nights are lovely and clear. You are in awe of their rugged beauty. We make it a 'back-to-school, one last hurrah to summer' event. We invite friends, bring firewood, dinner and fixings for smores. It's a great evening out."
Q: If we asked your kids why their mom is the best, what would they say?
"They are so proud of the volunteer work I do. I was the PTA President at my daughter's school for two years and am a volunteer with SCORE.org providing marketing advice to small businesses. They are also proud that I have my own business and love to tell people about it. But, mostly, they say I'm the best because I take care of them and love them."

Q: What is one thing other moms would be surprised to know about you?
"Sometimes I yell. It's true. Most people see me as a very patient and quiet type. For the most part, I am, but I get frustrated from time to time, just like everyone else."
